Chen Li's Research on Sound Categories and the Initials of Gangu Dialect in Gansu Province
Chen Li's Research on Qieyun systematically sorted out and studied the"old"aspects of Qieyun preserved in"Guangyun".He mainly conducted in-depth analysis from the stylistic perspective, put forward the famous"method of linking",and obtained the original sound categories and rhyme groups of Qieyun. The results obtained in his Research on Sound Categories were divided into voiceless and voiced sounds,to-taling forty categories.By comparing the twenty-one voiceless sound categories with the initials of today's Gangu dialect,it can be found that the existence of ʨjv,ʨʻjv,ɕjv,and jv in the Gangu dialect reflects some special laws in the development of the Chinese language since ancient times. There are also unique phenom-ena such as the use of the consonant initial k for characters of the"Yingmu"(Initial of Ying),which are likely to be remnants of the Archaic Chinese. There are also some other phonetic phenomena, such as the changes in other phonetic elements induced by the devoicing of voiced sounds, which may be caused by the influence of syllable morphological changes in the process of dialect integration. All these phenomena are of"specimen"value in demonstrating the characteristics and unique phonetic phenomena in the development process of the Chinese phonetic system.
