On the Legal Regulation of Genetically Modified Food Technology in China
While genetically modified(GM)food technology is crucial to tackling the human food crisis, the question of whether it is safe has long been an open one.The long-standing debate over the safety of this technology has resulted in two opposing camps:those against GM food(anti-GM)and those in favor of it(pro-GM).The development of GM food technology requires guidance and protection from institutional norms, including policies, ethics, and laws, with laws playing a dominant role.Standing on the side of the law, legislation to regulate GM food technology must follow the concept of risk prevention, with the goal of maximizing the technological benefits.Currently,China's legislative system for regulating GM food is still lacking. There is a lack of specific legislation addressing the safety issues of GM food, and the related civil and criminal legislation is also weak.To ensure the safety of this technology and maximize its benefits,it is necessary to consider enacting a special law on GM food safety and further improving China's Criminal Law and Civil Law to better meet the practical needs of regulating GM food technology in China.
