Temporal and Spatial Writing and Cultural Memory in Du Fu's Longyou Poetry
During his four-month residence in Longyou,Du Fu composed over one hundred poems.Al-though the achievements of these poems are not as significant as those from his time in Kuizhou,Du Fu's po-etry from Longyou marks a turning point in his poetic career. On the axis of time and space,Du Fu's Longyou poems successfully transform the immediate memories of life into texts of cultural memory. They not only depict the social conditions of Longyou during the An Lushan Rebellion but also write about the vast landscapes of the frontier, the memories of the Tang Dynasty's transition from prosperity to decline, and the traumatic memories brought about by war.Influenced by his life experiences during this period,Du Fu tends to choose images of weak yet resilient entities, such as sick horses and reeds,as poetic symbols.Through the lens of emotion,Du Fu inevitably reflects on the times in his Longyou poetry;however,he con-sistently pays attention to the fate of the nation, worries about the turbulent social and political conditions, and laments the traumas caused by war.He steadfastly upholds his morals and beliefs in adversity, yearning for a harmonious and stable social life.
