Taiwan Authorities'Perception and Response to Sino-Indonesian Relations after the"September 30"Affair of 1965
The September 30 Affair marked a watershed in the development of Indonesian foreign policy and a turning point in Sino-Indonesian relations.Following the incident, the Taiwan authorities attempted to seize the opportunity to restore"diplomatic"relations with Indonesia when the Sino-Indonesian relations deteriorated, while the Indonesian government dangled the prospect of"establishing diplomatic relations"in front of Taiwan to elicit economic support. Thus,Jakarta's flexible fence-sitting policies exacerbated the complexity of its relations with both its relations with both the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region, putting Taiwan's authorities in an awkward dilemma.Taiwan's efforts to draw closer to Indonesia were always under the shadow of the Chinese government's influence.Indonesia sought aid and attempted to maintain trade relations for its national benefit, however,it was unwilling to challenge the One-China principle. Both Indonesia's misgiving about China and practical consideration determined the failure of Taiwan's efforts.
