Research on the Cultural Mechanism of Intergroup Contact Affecting Cross-Straits Youth Cooperation
Intergroup contact is one of the key methods to promote intergroup harmony and improve intergroup relationship.Intergroup contact among youth across the Taiwan Straits helps to deepen the integrated development and promote the development of cross-Straits relations.Based on the theory of intergroup contact, this research conducts a social psychology experiment involving 414 Taiwan youth to explore the impact of intergroup contact on cross-Straits youth cooperation behavior. It compares the effects of intergroup contact among Taiwan youth with different cultural orientations, revealing the priming effects of cultural contexts. The research findings are as follows:firstly, cultural orientation plays a moderating role, where the extent of active intergroup contact affecting cross-Straits youth cooperation behavior is moderated by levels of individualism.Taiwan youth who value collectivism and interpersonal connections show higher levels of cooperation as their positive intergroup contact experiences increase.Secondly, cultural contexts have a priming effect on the cultural orientation of Taiwan youth.Taiwan youth with blurred cultural orientations exhibit a gradient change from individualism to collectivism, which positively affects cooperation among cross-Straits youth. This exploration of the cultural mechanisms affecting cross-Straits youth cooperation through the cultural dimensions of intergroup cooperative behavior provides a theoretical basis for further enhancing the quality of cross-Straits youth exchanges and cooperation.Practically,to optimize the effects of intergroup contact under the existing conditions across the Straits,it is beneficial to focus on the intrinsic cultural characteristics of Taiwan youth who value collectivism and interpersonal connectons. This focus will strengthen the Chinese cultural consciousness among cross-Straits youth.
