Reflections on the Enlightenment of Mainland Intellectuals in Taiwan Region in the 1950s and 1960s
Around 1949,some intellectuals chose to move to Taiwan and Hong Kong. The trends of traditionalism and liberalism that had emerged in the earlier decades continued in these regions.Traditionalists, centered around the Hong Kong-based Democratic Review, formed a cultural community, assigning themselves the mission of"cultural sowing"and"rejuvenating Chinese culture".Liberal intellectuals,on the other hand, gathered around Free China,to revive the enlightenment spirit of the May Fourth Movement and continue to challenge traditional norms. After the cessation of Free China, the magazine Wenxing continued its legacy. In this unique historical context, the traditionalists critically reflected on the enlightenment values of freedom, democracy, and science pioneered by the liberals.Their cultural reflection on the relationship between tradition and enlightenment has left a valuable intellectual legacy.
