Revisiting the "Re-establishment" of Mainland Universities in Taiwan Region(1949-1970)
Following the Kuomintang's retreat to Taiwan in 1949,the Taiwan authorities focused on re-establishing several mainland universities in Taiwan region.This initiative aimed to meet the growing demand for higher education,fulfill political and military objectives,and address the developmental challenges facing higher education.Historical archives of relevant universities in Taiwan region reveal that the"re-establishment"of mainland universities took place mostly between 1949 and 1970,with military and police academies and general universities being the two main types of institutions.These two types differed in their"re-establishment"timelines,site selections,and development paths.The"re-establishment"of mainland universities in Taiwan region was a product of a unique historical context.These institutions not only laid the foundation for cultivating high-level talent and advancing higher education in Taiwan region but also contributed to preserving the cultural heritage of their mainland counterparts and promoting cross-straits higher education exchange and cooperation.
