The Hong Kong Conference of the Chinese Communist Party in 1948 and the Transformation of Revolutionary Work in Taiwan
After Taiwan's restoration, the Chinese Community Party(CCP)established the Taiwan Provincial Working Committee to lead the revolutionary work across the island. While the Taiwan revolutionary cause achieved certain successes, issues such as a low number of party members and a lack of unity between new and old cadres persisted. To advance the Taiwan revolution and summarize experiences and lessons, the Central Committee of the CCP's Shanghai Bureau convened a meeting of Taiwan residents cadres in Hong Kong(the Hong Kong Conference)in the summer of 1948.Participants included the leaders of the CCP's Shanghai Bureau and the key cadres of the Taiwan Provincial Working Committee. The conference conducted a preliminary review of the historical issues of the Taiwan Communist Party, drafted the resolution"On Taiwan Work",analyzed the characteristics of Taiwan residents society, and clarified the revolutionary tasks in Taiwan, and promoted the Taiwan revolution with a focus of the united front, armed struggle, and party building. After the Hong Kong Conference, the underground party in Taiwan adjusted its work strategy and made significant progress in branch building, armed work, and labor movements. As the revolutionary situation developed, the Provincial Working Committee modified some of the conference's resolutions based on practical needs, shifted its focus to rural areas, reorganized armed work, and placed greater emphasis on the importance of concealment and infiltration. The Hong Kong Conference demonstrated the CCP's emphasis on the Taiwan revolution and had a profound impact on the development of the revolutionary cause in Taiwan region.
