Taste of Nostalgia:Russian Emigrants,Field and Spatial Production at Taipei's Astoria Café
On the streets of Taipei in the 1960s,Astoria was not only a café where exiled Russians could satisfy their cravings for home-style cuisine, but also a haven for local writers to produce literary works.Against the backdrop of the cold war and martial law in Taiwan region, the existence of Astoria relied on the business model of the proprietors, the preferences of patrons, and the shifts in social atmosphere. Here, the delicate balance between foreign and local cultures created a unique cultural space.Despite the ongoing White Terror, the patronage of Chiang Ching-kuo and his wife rendered the"US-Soviet"relationship exceptional within the Cold War context, providing fertile ground for the development of contemporary Taiwan's literature. The birth of Astoria, along with its location and customers, created a unique environment of power, discourse, and sensory experiences that has been remembered for nearly seventy years to this day.
