From "Transitional Justice" to "Independence in Memory":The Approaches,Objectives, and Consequences of the DPP Authorities'Implementation of "Democratization of Memory"
The issue of memory is of great significance to the"Transitional Justice"implemented by the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP)authorities in Taiwan region. It is thus a major topic in the"Mission Conclusion Report of Transitional Justice Commission".From the perspective of memory politics, the DPP authorities use political power to affect memory and carry out the project of"Democratization of Memory".By limiting the ways of remembering, expanding the subjects of memory, and broadening the mediums of memory, the DPP authorities aim to alter the content, framework, and nature of Taiwan's collective memory. They intend to achieve"deepening democracy",promote"Transitional Justice",and consolidate the"sense of community"in Taiwan region. However,in terms of actual consequences,"Democratization of Memory"not only confuses Taiwan region's collective memory and leads to further social division but also serves as a"hegemony of memory"for the DPP authorities, thereby eroding democracy. What is particularly alarming is that the DPP authorities aim at shaping the"memory of Taiwan independence"to achieve"Independence in Memory"by repositioning Taiwan's history and severing the memory connections across the Strait. In short, the DPP authorities'implementation of"Democratization of Memory"within"Transitional Justice"only nominally promotes justice and democracy, while in reality it becomes a political tool for suppressing political forces such as the Kuomintang(KMT)and pursuing"Taiwan independence".Essentially,it represents a crude manipulation and interference by political power in the collective memory of Taiwan society.
