An Analysis of Three Qing Dynasty Maps of Taiwan in the Old Collection of Xujiahui Catholic Church
The three Qing Dynasty maps of Taiwan preserved in the old collection of the Xujiahui Catholic Library in Shanghai—"Fujian Province,Taiwan Prefecture Map","Taiwan Prefectural Map",and"Taiwan County Map"—were all created before the end of the Qianlong reign. These three maps were all based on the"General Map of the World",the"Full Map"of Taiwan, and maps in contemporary local gazetteers. Therefore, their content does not hold particularly high historical value. However, the"production"methods of these three maps demonstrate some characteristics of ancient Chinese maps:the representation time of a map did not necessarily coincide with its actual creation time, which facilitated map forgery;creating new maps in ancient China was a difficult task, usually involving the practice of copying and revising earlier maps, which led to the formation of genealogies of maps.
