Shifts in Lithuania's Policy Toward Taiwan from a Small-State Perspective:Causes,Pathways, and Implications
In recent years, some Central and Eastern European countries have retrogressed in their stance towards China, especially in their policy towards the Taiwan region.Lithuania stands out as a prime example among these nations, not only by using international public opinion to discredit China but also by attempting to undermine China's sovereignty on the Taiwan question and support Taiwan authorities's efforts to gain the so-called"international space".On the one hand, the Lithuanian government has been using"bilateral trade"as a means to deepen its substantive relations with Taiwan authorities and reap economic benefits. On the other hand,in order to enhance its voice in the European Union and gain the attention and support of the United States,Lithuania tends to display conflicting behaviors toward China. These behaviors are related to Lithuania's status as a small country.Given the similarities between some Central and Eastern European countries and Lithuania, the shift in Lithuania's policy towards Taiwan will not only jeopardize Sino-European relations but also create a negative"demonstration effect",encouraging external forces to intervene in the Taiwan question. Therefore, this trend warrants significant attention and preventive measures.
