Maxim Gorky in the Turn of Taiwan Literature in the 1930s
During the 1930s,literature of socialist realism, exemplified by Maxim Gorky, sparked heated discussions worldwide, including in the Taiwan region. This period marked a significant shift in Taiwan's literary development,as the focus transitioned from experimenting with language forms in the 1920s to exploring the possibilities of creative practice.Through exchanges and interaction with left-wing individuals from Chinese mainland,Colonial Taiwan, and Japan, the Taiwan literary circle, then in a state of flux, was introduced to Gorky's works. Many Taiwan writers actively translated and promoted Gorky's writing. For writers living under Japanese colonial rule,Gorky, who overcame a humble background to become a great writer, served as a role model.Although some intellectuals in Taiwan initially confused new realism with socialist realism,Gorky's influence helped them grasp the two important characteristics of socialist realism:its"positive role in social life"and"revolutionary romanticism".
