Microstructure of carbon black and its application in EPDM rubber
This paper examines the microstructure and macroscopic physical and mechanical properties of carbon black of the same grade(N550)that is produced using three different processes. The study uses scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)to analyze the microstructure and particle size distribution of three kinds of carbon black aggregates. The study compares the differences in microstructure and dispersion state of the three types of carbon black;and investigates the variations in physical and mechanical properties in EPDM and processing properties of products. The research results indicate that carbon black with smaller particle size has lower degree of adhesion between primary particles, better dispersion and reinforcing effect, good fluidity of rubber material, and lower energy consumption during processing.
