Reinforcement effect of modified aramid fibre on properties of flame-retardant EPDM materials
The surface of aramid fibre(AF)was chemically modified using self-polymerization of dopamine, graft reaction of silane coupling agent, and complexation reaction between phytic acid(PA)and trivalent iron ions(Fe3+),in order to prepare modified aramid fibre AF-Si-P and AF-Si-P-Fe.The effect of aramid fibre modification on the comprehensive performance of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer(EPDM)composites was investigated. The results showed that compared with the control sample and unmodified AF,the surface roughness of the two modified AFs was increased, the char formation ability at the high temperature range was enhanced, and the processing safety and curing extent of the two modified AF-filled EPDM blends were improved.Compared to control sample and unmodified AF-filled EPDM vulcanizate, the hardness and tear strength of modified AFs-filled EPDMs increased.Compared with the control sample, the introduction of AF was beneficial to reduce the peak of heat release rate, prolong the ignition time and increase the residual mass, and the effect of modified AF on the flame retardant properties of EPDM vulcanizates was further improved. What's more,AF-Si-P-Fe showed excellent smoke suppression effect on EPDM vulcanizate.
