The Correlation between Group Cohesion and Mood States of Table Tennis Athletes during the Pre-Competition Period
OBJECTIVE:This study aims to investigate the correlation between group cohesion and mood states among table tennis athletes during the preparation period and explore the feasibility of improving their mood states by enhancing group cohesion.METHODS:Literature review, questionnaire survey, mathematical statistics, and the Revised Group Environment Questionnaire(RGEQ)and Profile of Mood States(POMS)were used to investigate the group cohesion and mood states of table tennis athletes during the preparation period.Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test,Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis were conducted on the data.RESULTS:(1)The group cohesion scores of table tennis athletes during the preparation period were at a good level, with male athletes showing significantly higher task attraction than female athletes.(2)The mood states of table tennis athletes during the preparation period were at a good level, with fatigue and tension being the main negative emotions.Male athletes showed significantly higher positive emotions and self-esteem than female athletes, while college-level athletes showed significantly higher total mood disturbance(TMD),negative emotions, and confusion than high school-level athletes.(3)There was a weak negative correlation between group cohesion and total mood disturbance,a weak negative correlation with negative emotions, and a moderate positive correlation with positive emotions among table tennis athletes during the preparation period.Group cohesion had a significant negative predictive effect on total mood disturbance and negative emotions, and a significant positive predictive effect on positive emotions.CONCLUSION:The group cohesion and mood states of table tennis athletes during the preparation period were good, with male athletes showing higher positive emotions and college-level athletes experiencing more negative emotions.Enhancing group cohesion during the preparation period can have a positive impact on the mood states of table tennis athletes.SUGGESTIONS:Coaches should pay attention to the fatigue and psychological tension of athletes during the preparation period, especially female athletes and college-level athletes.By strengthening group cohesion, coaches can help alleviate their negative emotions, enhance their psychological adaptation ability, and improve their competitive performance.
