Research on the Relationship between Taijiquan,Public Square Dancing and Cognitive Function of the Elderly
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship among Taijiquan, public square dancing and cognitive function of the elderly,as well as the relationship between these two sports and cognition under different genders and ages.METHODS:Healthy older adults(over 60 years old)with different sports characteristics were recruited from some communities and elderly sports associations in Ningbo City. They were divided into Taijiquan group, public square dancing group and control group according to their sports characteristics. The cognitive function of the elderly was evaluated by the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(CMMSE).Multiple linear regression was used to explore the variables interrelated with cognitive scores.One-way analysis of variance and covariance analysis were used to detect whether there were inter-group cognitive differences among the Taijiquan group, public square dancing group and control group, all with P<0.05.RESULTS:The cognitive function of the elderly in the Taijiquan group and public square dancing group was significantly higher than that in the control group. After controlling the influencing variables, there were still inter-group differences in cognitive function between the Taijiquan group and public square dancing group and the control group, but there was no cognitive difference between the two sports groups. The cognitive function of the elderly in the female group and the elderly group over 65 years old in the Taijiquan group and public square dancing group was significantly higher than that in the control group, and there was no cognitive difference between the two sports groups in these two groups. In addition,no significant cognitive difference was found among the three groups in the male group and the elderly group under 65 years old.CONCLUSION:Taijiquan and public square dancing have a significant positive correlation with the overall cognitive function of the elderly and are associated with higher cognitive function. There is no superiority of cognitive improvement between the two sports. In addition,Taijiquan and public square dancing have a more significant effect on cognitive improvement in the female group and the elderly group over 65 years old.
