The Modernization Journey of Traditional Sports of Ethnic Minorities:A Historical and Cultural Analysis of Lacrosse from Native American Indians in North America and its Implications
On October 16,2023,the International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of lacrosse,originating from Native American tribes in North America,as an official event for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.Lacrosse,transitioning from an ancient tribal ball game to a trendy modern sport,has become a prime example of the modernization transformation of traditional sports of ethnic minorities worldwide.The study provides a panoramic analysis of the historical and cultural evolution of Native American lacrosse.It highlights the functions of lacrosse in physical fitness,spiritual enlightenment,diplomatic promotion,and industrial cultivation.The exploration of the modernization journey of Native American lacrosse offers significant lessons and insights for the development of traditional sports of ethnic minorities in our country.The study identifies four stages in the development of lacrosse from Native American Indians:incubation and nurturing,foundational transformation,promotion and publicity,and steady prosperity.The transformation and development of this sport have been driven by the cohesion of local elites,the establishment of social organizations,investments in school education,and the empowerment of media dissemination.Looking ahead,it is recommended to focus on the construction of"other"identity in traditional sports of ethnic minorities,support representative inheritors of traditional sports of ethnic minorities,enhance the operational capacity of organizations promoting traditional sports of ethnic minorities,improve mechanisms for integrating into schoolst traditional sports of ethnic minorities,and innovate cross-media narrative strategies for traditional sports of ethnic minorities.
