The externally inclined butterfly arch bridges with two outward inclined arch ribs have certain competitiveness in small to medium-sized urban landscape bridges, because of its beautiful appearance. The lat-eral distance between the two arch ribs of such bridges is too long to set wind braces, and prone to instability outside the plane. At the same time, the arch ribs withstand an out of plane bending moment which results in a bi-directional bending state.Based on the vehicle overturned externally inclined arch bridge on an overpass highway as the research object, the spatial finite element model was established. The influence of parameters such as arch rib inclination angle and stiffness on the structural performance was studied, and the optimal arch rib inclination angle and stiffness were proposed.
