Based on the norms of the target language society,Geyi,a translation strategy, was adopted by GU Hong-ming in his English translations of Confucian classics, which,in the perspective of translation ethics, conforms to the norm-based ethics but runs counter to the representation ethics. This strategy promotes the fluency of his translations whereas effaces the foreignness of traditional Chinese culture. As an important way to upgrading cultural soft power, today's translation of traditional classics should moderately adopt defamilization strategy, while taking the norms of target language society into consideration, thus conforming to the translation ethics, which means giving priority to keeping foreignness and not ignoring norms.
