A New Probe Into the Virtualization and Mechanism of"Hui Tou"
In the interpretation of Modern Chinese Dictionary(5th edition),"Hui Tou"has the meanings of verb and adverb,and Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th edition)adds the meanings of con-junctions.Compared with adverbs,conjunctions belong to a more typical category of function words,and"Hui Tou"has undergone further virtualization.The emergence of"Hui Tou"can be traced back to the Han Dynasty,not the Tang Dynasty mentioned by previous scholars.Since the Qing Dynasty,"Hui Tou"has become a mature adverb of time.In modern times,its meanings of related conjunctions came into being.In language use,"Hui Tou"also appears as a discourse marker that has not been in-cluded in dictionaries.In the virtualization process of"Hui Tou",the syntactic position,interaction be-tween metonymy and metaphor,pragmatic inference and subjectivization play a major role.
