Bile acids are associated with pruritus in primary biliary cholangitis
Bile acids are amphiphilic molecules synthesized from cholesterol in hepatocytes. In addition to promoting the absorption of dietary lipids, bile acids can also act as signaling molecules to bind to a variety of nuclear receptor fam-ilies and cell membrane receptor families in vivo, and play an important role in regulating bile acid homeostasis.Primary biliary cholangitis(PBC)is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic cholestasis and often accompanied by bile acid metabolism disorders.Pruritus is a common concomitant symptom of PBC and is thought to be closely related to the disorder of bile acid metabolism. This paper mainly introduced the physiological function of bile acids and their role in PBC and PBC-related pruritus, aiming to provide possible treatment for PBC patients.
