Research progress on the correlation between metabolic-associated fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)is two common metabolic diseases with high individual prevalence worldwide, and the combined prevalence of the two diseases is on the rise. There is a complex and close association between MAFLD and T2DM,which is reciprocal causation and jointly promotes the incidence of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease,liver-related complications and extrahepatic malignancies. This article introduced the correlation between MAFLD and T2DM from the aspects of epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis and therapy. The research shows that there is a strong bidirectional relationship between them.MAFLD was an independent risk factor for T2DM,and this risk increased with the increase of liver fat deposition.More-over,T2DM also promoted the occurrence and progression of MAFLD.Therefore, while preventing and treating MAFLD,we should also pay attention to the management of T2DM to improve the overall health of patients.
