From its inception in the 1920s to its incorporation into governmental regulation in the 1970s,archaeological work in the Hong Kong region gradually matured during its early development. This paper reviews the major archaeological fieldwork and publications during this period, summarizing the patterns and characteristics of the early development of archaeology in the Hong Kong region. The disciplinary boundaries of early archaeology in Hong Kong evolved from ambiguity to clarity, progressing towards scientific rigor. The theoretical framework of Hong Kong archaeology followed a trajectory of continuous development of cultural historicism, maintaining its international relevance throughout.Scholars began integrating archaeological materials from Hong Kong with those from the eastern Guangdong and Wu-Yue regions from the 1940s onwards, thereby situating Hong Kong archaeology within the broader context of archaeological research in South China.
