"Shibei(lost-back)mirrors"specifically refer to the Tang-Dynasty bronze mirror bodies that remain after the gold or silver backs of the mirrors have peeled off.Through observation of these"lost-back mirrors",this paper suggests that the unique symbols and traces on their backs indicate that the bronze mirror bodies and the gold or silver backs of these mirrors were produced separately by different organizations in different locations and then assembled together. The assembly of gold or silver-backed mirrors was completed through physical fitting without the use of lacquer, and the symbols on the mirror backs mainly served as alignment indicators during assembly.Understanding and studying the gold or silver-backed mirrors require a dual perspective, considering both the perspective of precious gold and silver objects and that of bronze mirrors. On one hand,it is necessary to understand the management practices of gold and silver objects in comparison with those of gold or silver-backed mirrors. On the other hand, the reasons for the eventual decline of gold or silver-backed mirrors should be understood from the perspective of shifts in aesthetic preferences regarding bronze mirrors.
