The epitaph of Lu Shi,wife of Yan Yun'nan, elder brother of Yan Zhenqing, was acquired by the Xi'an Beilin Museum in 2021.This discovery revealed the marriage alliance between the Yan family of Langya and the Lu family of Wu Prefecture. The Lu family originated from the Tawei branch of the Lu family of Wu Prefecture and is notable as the great-grandson of the renowned Southern-Dynasty literary figure Lu Chen.During the Southern Dynasties, the Yan and Lu families were well-regarded for their scholarly and literary achievements and started to have some engagements. After a period of obscurity following their initial migration to the north, the Yan family of Langya began a period of positive development due to their correct political stance during the late Sui and early Tang periods. After Wu Zetian and Empeor Xuanzong, both families gained societal recognition for their profound scholarly traditions.Especially with the trend toward the imperial examination system, their family members gradually emerged in political circles.Their familial and marital connections helped establish a network of mutual support, strengthening both their political relations and the social foundation for their family development.
