The Kongtougou site in Qishan County,Shaanxi Province is a large Shang-and-Zhou-period settlement in the Zhouyuan area, possibly serving as the fief of a high-ranking noble not of the Ji lineage. In 2006,the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology and the School of Archaeology and Museology of Peking University conducted excavations at the Zhaojiatai and Dushan residential areas within the site.A total of 33 ash pits dating from the late pre-Zhou period to the Western Zhou period were unearthed, yielding a wealth of archaeological data. These findings confirm the chronology and nature of these two residential areas and provide further insights into the settlement structure and economic patterns of the Kongtougou site.Additionally, the late-Shang and incipient-Zhou period archaeological remains discovered contribute to a deeper exploration of pre-Zhou culture in the region.
