Yuan Ji was the third older brother of Yuan Zhen who was a prominent statesman and literary figure during the Tang Dynasty.His name appears in historical records such as the Biography of Yuan Zhen chapter in the Old Book of Tang,the Genealogy of Zaixiang Grand Chancellors chapter in the New Book of Tang,Compilation of Yuanhe Surnames,and the epitaph authored by Bai Juyi for the tomb of Lady Zheng,wife of the Yuan family in Xingyang,Henan Province.This paper reviews the epitaph of Yuan Ji,discussing relevant historical issues mentioned therein.The content covers topics such as the history of the Yuan Ji family,Tang Dynasty diplomacy with frontier minority ethnic groups,economic difficulties in the middle-Tang Dynasty,and the distribution of family cemetery plots,providing valuable supplements for the study of Tang-Dynasty history.
