Abstract
In this paper,I propose that current relevance,a grammatical function found cross-linguistically,is a structure of focus. The flexibility of its interpretation comes from the conversational implicature raised by focus in different contexts. The idea entails a syntactic model consisting of two core parts:a focus marker and the perfective aspect. This model is realized as the perfect in English, which includes the auxiliary have and the past participle, and the Double Le Configuration in Mandarin, which involves the co-occurrence of verbal le and sentential le.These morpho-syntactic structures exhibit similar distributional restrictions, such as the incompatibility with adverbial modifiers in the absence of a proper context, and the constraints typically found with the focus intervention effect. This analysis shows that from a cross-linguistic view, there may be a universal mechanism that express the meaning of current relevance with focus and perfectiveness.
