The Lieutenant of Inishmore written by contemporary Anglo-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh tells a dark humorous story about Padraic,a lieutenant in Irish National Liberation Army, who takes revenge for the"death"of his pet cat Wee Thomas, resulting in the deaths of four men and two cats.Starting from Padraic's madness, this paper analyzes the alluded terrorist incidents of the Irish Republican Army and the National Liberation Army during the Troubles, and holds that the atrocities are the result of the ultra-nationalist political ideology, which gives birth to madness, and the violence is the external expression of madness.McDonagh's violence writing is a literary event. It is the result of the playwright's observation and interpretation of the social reality during the Troubles, and makes the audiences confront violence immersively, making them realize the absurdity of violence, and then oppose and resist violence. In the current era of frequent local wars and the existence of terrorism,McDonagh's violence writing is of great practical significance.
