Rural writing with pastoral inclination is often dismissed as a kind of false artistic construction because of its obscuring and beautifying the harsh social reality, but the organic reality such as the values and structure of feelings it contains is often ignored. As the most representative regional writer in New England at the end of the 19th century,Sarah Orne Jewett has been imaginatively reproducing the New England countryside almost throughout her creative career. However, her rural sketches are not limited to the full presentation of physical"facts"in traditional regional and realistic literature. It reflects the essence of the New England countryside and the American society in the late 19th century through selectively constructing the pastoral illusion of the continuation of the"Old New England"rural life in the 18th century. In other words,Jewett's New England countryside is not confined to history, but aims to recreate it;She selectively reconstructs the memories of rural New England at the time, not restores rural New England memories.Jewett's Deephaven adopts double narration, not deliberately taking sides with any of the community perspectives, but constructing"neighbors"in conversation,so that readers can have more understanding and thinking about the past, the present and the future in the reconstruction of the contested history.
