Marjorie Chan's two-act play A Nanking Winter(2009)explores the relationship between the individual and the historical memories of the nation from the perspectives of the connections between collective and individual memories, the unity of public and private identities, and how oblivion in the present can act as a"replay"of atrocities in the past, showing great concern to the obstacles that confront the victims as they struggle to speak out.The dramatic conflicts between characters contain profound social significance and reflect the conflicts between justice and injustice, innocence and guilt, and the victim and the perpetrator.A Nanking Winter not only highlights the responsibilities of individuals in the present to pay attention to,memorize and transmit the historical truth and the victims'sufferings in the past, but also embodies the social significance of literary writing, namely the remembrance of historical truths and the passing on of the determination to struggle and speak out for the victims who deserve justice across time, space and generations.
