Advances in the Studies of the Endangered Aquatic Fern in China
The advances for studies on cell biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, molecular biology, and phylogeography of the endangered aquatic fern in China is reviewed. The results indicated that the destruction and loss of aquatic habitats might be the main factors responsible for the reduction in Isoetes and Ceratopteris populations. The genetic information presented in the study may provide an evidence to support the protection of natural populations of the endangered aquatic fern in China.Studies on spores, cell biology, and molecular biology revealed that there are Isoetes sinensis,I.hypsophila,I.yunguiensis,I.taiwanensis,and I.orientalis in China, mistaking I.yunguiensis for I.japonica.There were cryptic species probably in the fern Ceratopteris thalictroides in China.Conservation strategies were also discussed.
