Collective Action of Revival of Rural Folk Sports and Its Reflections on Governance:Field Investigation of Dragon Boat Activities in Pushi
The three explanatory paradigms formed by the impetus and realization mechanism of collective action in the academic circle were convincing, but they still could not provide satisfactory answers to the formation mechanism of collective action for the revival of rural folk sports under the rapid changes of social structure.Based on the collective action of the revival of rural folk sports, this study investigated the whole process of the revival of dragon boat activities in Pushi city with the solution of three key problems of collective action as the analytical framework. It was found that in the absence of strong external support, social capital based on trust and identity, the promise of convenience linked by interests and reciprocity, and mutual supervision based on shared norms were the key variables affecting the revival of rural folk sports, and the three jointly constructed the logic of collective action in practice.Sustainable collective action could only be formed when people had a sense of collective or cultural identity. The individuals could realize the importance of participating in collective action and most people abided by their commitments and supervised. This showed that the formation of collective action was not a linear process,in which many factors such as social structure, interest pursuit, individual construction and external political environment played a role together.Taking into account various factors and their interaction changes was the key to understanding the complexity and diversity of collective action formation.
