Changes of Connotation of Sports Concept in Process of Chinese Path to Modernization:From Saving the Nation From Subjugation and Ensuring Its Survival to Putting People First
Modernization,as a comprehensive social transformation, has shaped diverse sports concepts across different historical stages. This paper employs the body as an analytical tool for sports concepts in order to reveal the extension and renewal of sports concept in the process of modernization.Since the modern times, the sports concept has undergone significant transformations.Initially,in the aftermath of the Opium War,the sports concept responded to the national crisis by emphasizing the restructuring of the body to enhance the race and contribute to national salvation.During the early years of the founding of the P.R.C,the sports concept shifted towards a focus on the national construction for rejuvenation, highlighting the significance of body molding in this context.During the period of reform and opening up,the primary goal of sports shifted towards supporting the development of a market economy.Consequently, the body was reconstructed to align with the requirements of market-driven progress. In the new era,the subjectivity of the body has gained prominence, and the sports concept has pivoted towards the shaping of the body as a key element for building a strong nation.Throughout this transformative process, the body, serving as the nexus of power, discourse, and knowledge operations, has evolved from a passive disciplinary focus to an emphasis on subjectivity. This evolution encapsulates the expansion of sports concepts within the framework of the Chinese path to modernization.
