Themes and Theoretical Basis of Grounded Theory in Sports Studies
Presently, limitations exist in applying grounded theory within the domestic sports domain, encompassing static and de-contextualized misapplications, inadequacies in defining the adaptability basis for method selection and research topics, and an insufficient grasp of divergences among various schools of thought. To address these inherent methodological uncertainties, this paper proposes that all social phenomena in sports are suitable for grounded theory. However, before adopting grounded theory as a research method, scholars must realign their research paradigms to ensure coherence with the theory's philosophical basis and its scope within the method's structure. This necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the constructivist and interpretivist viewpoints supporting grounded theory at ontological and epistemological levels.Methodologically,it involves clarifying symbolic interactionism and pragmatic orientations, and applying grounded theory to contextualized, interactive sports topics. Moreover, researchers must discern methodological disparities among diverse schools of thought, grounded in their shared knowledge,to effectively apply grounded theory.Consequently, scholars can grasp the breadth of grounded theory's application in sports science, considering both commonalities and distinctions among these schools of thought.
