Effects of Mental Health Level on Prefrontal Cortex Activation in Chinese Prison Inmates:Evidence from Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy
Through analysis of the mental health level and influencing factors of the Chinese prison inmates and exploring the differences in prefrontal cortex activation exhibited by different mental health levels,a theoretical basis for the implementation of precise treatment and the prevention of pseudo morbid phenomena by the supervisory authorities, and a case study for the development of biological standards for the diagnosis and typing of mental health was provided.A cross-sectional study was used to include 129 male prison inmates, whose mental health level were measured according to the SCL-90 scale.Their frontal cortex hemodynamic responses were collected using a functional near-infrared device. It was shown that multinomial logistic regression analysis of demographic factors and mental health had statistically significant effects of disease history on the anxiety group(OR=2.784,95%CI 1.070-7.245,p=0.04),and on the depression group(OR=5.521,95%CI 1.287-23.693,p=0.02),and age on the anxiety group(OR=1.496,95%CI 3.334-7.434,p=0.01),and a statistically significant effect of age on the depression group(OR=4.548,95%CI 1.103-18.752,p=0.04).A t test of demographic factors and prefrontal cortex activation showed that disease history had a statistically significant effect on orbital frontal regions in the normal group(t=-2.167,p=0.03)and on orbital frontal regions in the depressed group(t=-2.575,p=0.01).Age had a statistically significant effect on left dorsolateral prefrontal regions in the depressed group(t=2.196,p=0.03)and on left temporal lobe regions in the psychotic group(t=-2.541,p=0.02),left dorsolateral prefrontal region(t=-4.072,p=0.00),and right dorsolateral prefrontal region(t=-2.343,p=0.03).It could be concluded that with the ageing of the inmates, the increase in the number of underlying diseases, the lack of physical activity,as well as the decline in physical and physiological functions, which led to dynamic changes in the level of mental health and even induced psychological disorders, became an important factor affecting the activation of the prefrontal cortex.
