Measuring refractive index of gemstones based on Brewster's law
The refractive index is a characteristic parameter for both natural and artificial gem-stones,which is of great significance for the identification of gemstones with different types and puri-ty.In this paper,a non-destructive strategy was developed for investigating the refractive index of dif-ferent kinds of gemstones based on Brewster's law introduced in college physics experiments. On this basis,a complete set of measurements and guidance devices were designed and constructed, and high-precision automatic collection of refractive index parameters of samples could be realized. Results showed that the refractive indexes of Hotan jade and diamond measured by the as-constructed devices were very close to their theoretical values, indicating high measurement accuracy.
