The comprehensive problem C of the 9th Chinese Undergraduate Physics Experiment Competition(Zhuhai Division)was to measure vortex current loss power and cumulative loss energy when a permanent magnet passing through a metal tube.The contestants needed to design and build a photoelectric gate device to measure the falling speed of the magnet and calculate the loss energy.The design and reference solutions of the problems were introduced in detail.Based on the competition re-sults and questionnaire responses,the weak knowledge and insufficient ability of contestants had been analyzed to provide reference for the teaching and reform of university physics experiment.
