Social self-efficacy and self-regulatory fatigue:The role of meaning in life and perceived social support
Objective:To observe the effect of social self-efficacy on self-regulatory fatigue in college students,and investigate whether meaning in life can mediate the effect between social self-efficacy and self-regulatory fatigue as well as the mediating effect of perceived social support in college students.Methods:By stratified random sampling,we conducted an online survey on 988 college students from two higher learning institutions in Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.The questionnaire consisted of Social Self-efficacy Scale,Meaning in Life Scale,Perceived Social Support Scale,and Self-regulatory Fatigue Scale.Results:① Self-regulatory fatigue was negatively correlated with social self-efficacy,perceived social support and meaning in life(r=-0.40;-0.39;-0.41,respectively,P<0.01),yet social self-efficacy was positively related to perceived social support and meaning in life(r=0.48;0.46,respectively,P<0.01),and perceived social support was in positive correlation with meaning in life(r=0.52,P<0.01);② Social self-efficacy could directly and negatively predict the self-regulatory fatigue of college students(β=0.27,P<0.01);③Meaning in life partially functioned intermediary role between social self-efficacy and self-regulatory fatigue,and the intermediary effect accounted for 31.70%of the total effect;④Perceived social support regulated the forward path of the mediating model,that is,the lower level of the perceived social support was,the higher level of social self-efficacy would be,and the meaning in life tended to strengthen(γ=0.16,t=4.12,P<0.01),and higher perceived social support level led to higher social self-efficacy and meaning in life(γ=0.35,t=10.380,P<0.01).Conclusion:Social self-efficacy can suppress the self-regulatory fatigue of college students by improving meaning in life,and perceived social support plays a significant role in regulating social self-efficacy and meaning in life.Attention on social self-efficacy,meaning in life and perceived social support can help to lower the self-regulatory fatigue of college students.
