Mediating effect of negative emotions between parental rejection and adolescent Internet addiction
Objective:To investigate the impact of parental rejection on the Internet addiction in adolescents visiting the outpatient clinics of psychiatric hospitals and whether the negative emotions may play a mediating role between parental rejection and Internet addiction.Methods:We conducted a survey on 207 adolescents who visited the youth clinic of Wuhu Fourth People's Hospital from May 2021 to May 2023 using Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran(EMBU),Hamilton depression scale-17(HAMD-17),Hamilton Anxiety Scale-14(HAMD-14)and Internet Addiction Test(IAT).Results:①Parental rejection was positively related to adolescent Internet addiction(r=0.26,P<0.01),depression(r=0.16,P<0.05)and anxiety(r=0.15,P<0.05),and depression and anxiety were in positive association with adolescent Internet addiction(r=0.32,P<0.01;r=0.31,P<0.01,respectively);(2)The direct impact of parental rejection on adolescent Internet addiction was significant,with effect value being 0.31.Both depression and anxiety were the mediating variable between parental rejection and adolescent Internet addiction,with an effect value of 0.05 and 0.04,respectively.Conclusion:Parental rejection could not only directly affect adolescent Internet addiction,but also indirectly affect adolescent Internet addiction through depression and anxiety,respectively.
