Effect of auricular acupoint therapy on upper limb lymphedema patients after breast cancer surgery based on"yi tong wei yong"theory
Objective:To evaluate the effect of auricular acupoint therapy guided by"yi tong wei yong"theory(The theory of regarding unimpeded flow as essential for normal bodily functions)on upper limb lymphedema patients after breast cancer surgery. Methods:Between March 2021 and December 2021,we recruited 80 upper limb lymphedema patients after breast cancer surgery treated in the breast cancer lymphedema nursing outpatient clinic of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital. The intervention group included 40 patients who were willing to receive auricular acupoint therapy combined with complete decongestive therapy(CDT)based on"yi tong wei yong"theory, and the control group consisted of 40 patients who chose CDT treatment alone. The circumference of the affected limb was compared between the two groups 1 day before treatment and at 1,2 and 3 months after treatment. The function of the affected upper limb and quality of life scores were compared between the two groups 3 months after treatment. Results:In the control group, all indicators of upper limb circumference were decreased after three months of treatment compared to pre-treatment levels(P<0.05).In the intervention group, these indicators except Hukou(Hegu acupoint)were decreased after 2 and 3 months of treatment(P<0.05),and Hukou also showed a decrease after 3 months of treatment compared to pre-treatment levels(P<O.05).After 3 months of treatment, all indicators in the intervention group were decreased compared to those in the control group(P<0.05).The DASH score of the intervention group after treatment was lower than that of the control group(P<0.05).Scores for physiological status, social and family status, emotional status, functional status, additional concerns and quality of life were higher than those of the control group(P<0.05).The higher the degree of upper limb dysfunction, the lower the quality of life score(r=-0.538,P<0.001).Conclusion:Auricular acupoint therapy combined with CDT based on"yi tong wei yong"theory is more effective than CDT alone in treating postoperative lymphedema in breast cancer patients, providing a valuable reference for clinical practice.
