The Impact of Self-efficacy on Medical Students'Self-stigma:the Mediating Effect of Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help
Objective To explore the mediating effect of attitude toward seeking professional psychological help on the self-stigma and self-efficacy on medical students'professional psychological help seeking. Methods Convenience sampling was used to select 1 445 collegians from a medical college from January to November 2023.The Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help(ATSPPH),General Self-efficacy Scale(GSES),and Self-stigma of Seeking Help Scale(SSOSH)were used for questionnaire surveys. Results The total score of ATSPPH was(68.77±6.13)score,the total score of GSES was(26.63±8.31)score,and the total score of SSOSH was(20.19±9.53)score.ATSPPH is negatively correlated with SSOSH(r=-0.525,P<0.01),positively correlated with GSES(r=0.189,P<0.01),and GSES is negatively correlated with SSOSH(r=-0.412,P<0.01).The mediation model shows that ATSPPH partially mediates the relationship between GSES and SSOSH,with a total effect of-0.412,a direct effect of-0.293,and an indirect effect of-0.118,mediation effect accounting for 28.64%of the total effect. Conclusion The GSES of medical students is at a moderately low level, while SSOSH and ATSPPH are at a relatively low level.ATSPPH and GSES can both directly affect the SSOSH level of medical students, while GSES can indirectly affect the SSOSH level of medical students through ATSPPH.Medical students should actively adopt strategies to combat stigma, enhance self-efficacy,improve their attitude level towards seeking help, and thereby reduce the level of stigma.
