Qualitative Study on the Real Emotional Experience and Needs of Parents Whose Children with Terminal Cancer
Objective To learn the true emotional experiences and needs of parents whose children with terminal cancer,and provide reference for the development of palliative care for children.Methods A descriptive and qualitative study was conducted with parents whose children with terminal cancer from Quanzhou Children's Hospital selected from January to April 2023 as the survey subjects.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 parents of the children,and order-based content analysis was used to analyze the input data.Results The two dimensions of real experience and emotional need of parents whose children with terminal cancer were summarized and analyzed,resulting in 2 sub-topics and 10 sub-themes.The real experience dimension includes emotional diversity of initial reactions,emotional management and coping strategies,the existence of positive emotions,coping methods with uncertainty,and the influence of social support.The dimension of emotional need includes the need for support and care,ways to seek help and support,strategies to alleviate emotional stress,the need for palliative care,and unmet needs.Conclusion Parents have diverse real experiences and emotional needs when facing children in the terminal cancer,and use different positive strategies to regulate their own emotions.In addition,palliative support plays an important role in this process,matching the emotional needs of the parents of the affected children.This matching of support and need emphasizes the necessity of improving the social support system.
