Excavation of Balipu Tang Tombs in Chaoyang,Liaoning
From July to September 2021,the Liaoning Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and others conducted a rescue excavation of two Tang tombs discovered in Balipu,Longcheng District,Chaoyang City.The two tombs that have been disturbed are brick-built and consist of the tomb passage,tomb gate,corridor,and single chamber.Tomb M1 has a smaller tomb chamber in the shape of a squircle,from which unearthed a small number of pottery,bronzes,and ironware;in tomb M2,with a larger circular tomb chamber,found a large amount of pottery,glazed pottery,bronzes,ironware,and silverware.According to tomb structures,unearthed artifacts,and epitaph inscriptions,M1 dates to the early Tang Dynasty;the occupant of M2 is a Khitan named Li Tong,the provincial governor(cishi)of Shizhou,who died in the second year of the Linde Era(665)of Emperor Gaozong of Tang and was buried in the first year of the Qianfeng Era(666).The excavation provides essential data for studying the material culture,cultural exchanges,and ethnic relations in the Chaoyang area during the Tang Dynasty.
