Excavation of Beiliwang Sand-filled Tombs of the Han Dynasty in Xi'an,Shaanxi
Beiliwang sand-filled tombs are located north of Beiliwang Village,Weiqu Street,Chang'an District,Xi'an City,Shaanxi Province,at the northern foot of Fengqi Plain. From June to December 2018,to cooperate with capital construction, the Xi'an Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology conducted a rescue excavation of the tombs. They are large-scale"甲"-shaped sand-filled tombs with long ramp passages, earthen pits and brick-built chambers(M1 on the north,M2 on the south),juxtaposed in a consistent direction, and the back walls are flush with each other and connected by a corridor.Although disturbed, archaeologists still unearthed over 200 pieces(groups)of artifacts from them, including glazed pottery, bronzes, ironware, and jades.According to artifacts and tomb bricks with inked inscriptions"Yichun Hou"(Marquis Yichun),archaeologists inferred that the tomb occupants were a certain generation of the Marquis Yichun and his wife of the Wang family in the late Western Han Dynasty. The excavation provided new materials for studying the construction process of sand-filled tombs, the Western Han's construction technology and the ranged marquises'economy.
