After analyzing the traditional restoration techniques for ceramics in China, and drawing on the Western concept of"identifiable"cultural relic restoration, this study presents a new restoration method for ceramics called the"downgrading method",which pioneers the treatment of restoration by reducing the original tone in filling the layer, imitating the glaze and painting color. With the restoration of two Ming official porcelain wares unearthed from the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln site as examples, the implementation process and results of the"downgrading method"are described and analyzed in detail. These provide a through demonstration of this method for the conservation and restoration of ceramic cultural relics in China.
