The Zhongtiao Mountain in the south of Shanxi Province is rich in copper.It is an important copper producing area in the Central Plains of the Pre-Qin period.Since the beginning of this century,many archaeological institutions have carried out different scales of excavations here and discovered and confirmed 18 sites of copper smelting remains of Pre-Qin period.Most of them are from the Xia to early Shang period,only a few sites contain of cultural remains of Western and Eastern Zhou dynasties.In this paper the general situation and discovery of each site are introduced and the developments and reasons of relevant activities are briefly analyzed.These information and preliminary study would contribute to understand the important relationship between the rise of the dynasties in Central Plains and the copper resources in southern Shanxi during the Bronze Age.
