In December 2020 and January 2021,the Department of Archaeology of Shanxi University(present School of Archaeology and Museology)with relevant organs investigated Shiyaohui Grottoes and Moli Grottoes in Wuxiang County,Changzhi City,Shanxi Province.Shiyaohui Grottoes is located at Shiyaohui Village where lies on the foot of Dongshan and near to the National Road 208.There is one cave facing east to west and three Buddhas are carved in this cave and eight niches remain on the facade of the cave.Moli Grottoes is located on the hillside in the east of Moli Village,Gucheng Town. There is a cave with three walls and an attached niche on the facade, both facing north. In this grotto, one Buddha and two Bodhisattvas were carved.Although the heavy makeup painting of the two grottoes are strong, their shapes and structures are completed. In addition, the theme and style of the statues can be basically recognized.According to these features,it can be inferred that both grottoes were cared in the Northern Qi Dynasty. In general, the discovery of these two small grottoes provide important data for the study of the appearance and spread of Buddhist statues in Southeast Region of Shanxi in the late Northern Dynasties.
