Abstract
David Lodge's literary works involve two major groups of characters in the realms of know-ledge and religion:campus characters and religious characters,profoundly showcasing the sur-vival dilemmas and spiritual crises faced by modern intellectuals and Catholics.Lodge skillfully blends the overall portrayal of character ensembles with in-depth individual character delinea-tion,all while incorporating elements of both modernism and postmodernism,culminating in a distinctive form of realistic character ensemble art.Amid the societal context of post-war waning faith and values,Lodge employs clever metaphors and pointed satire to unveil the spiritual crisis afflicting the Western intellectual sphere post-World War Ⅱ.His unique creative approach suc-cessfully integrates the intricacies and richness of character ensembles into his fictional universe,presenting readers with a profound and thought-provoking literary landscape.This demonstrates Lodge's deep concern and attention to the predicaments of the Western intellectual value system while providing valuable warnings for our own lives and values.
